The third Greater Peoria Honor Flight landed around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and veterans walked through a packed General Wayne A. Downing International Airport.
“It was very emotional but it was fantastic,” Dean Chilton, a Vietnam veteran said of his day. “Just a fantastic time.”
There were at least two World War II vets on the flight, but this is an opportunity for veterans of all conflicts to get their time in the spotlight. Diana Jarka’s husband, Fred, served in Germany during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
“Oh my goodness he’s my hero,” she said. “He’s so special. It just means the world to me to see him get honored like this is just wonderful.”
If you missed this iteration of Operation Homecoming, mark your calendar for October 8. Another Honor Flight full of local veterans will be counting on your support that night.
