CEFCU alerts its members of smishing scam

PEORIA (HOI) — CEFCU alerted the pubic about a smishing alert involving its members on Thursday.

Smishing is a tactic scammers use to obtain personal information via text or SMS message.

In a Facebook post by CEFCU, members have reported receiving text messages appearing to be from CEFCU asking them to authorize a certain transaction.

The post reads:

“If the member texts a response, they receive a follow up incoming call appearing to be a CEFCU phone number. The caller then attempts to obtain information, such as Online Banking credentials, Debit Card number and PIN, and account numbers.”

CEFCU said they will not text or call to ask for this information.

If you provided any information to this message, CEFCU asks for you to call 1-800-633-7077
